Black Youth
in STEM Club
A welcoming space for Black Youth to explore science and technology and find their place in it!
* 2025 WORKSHOPS ARE HERE*
WISE Kid-Netic Energy is excited to offer a Black Youth in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Programming, which will be facilitated by Black Undergraduate Instructors studying in STEM fields. We are offering FREE science and technology programming. This program will provide Black youth with an opportunity to gather and learn with other Black youth in a fun, hands-on approach. This is a great opportunity for Black youth to engage with science. We want to encourage curiosity and interest in STEM.
Black Youth in STEM will provide hands-on learning opportunities about coding, computational thinking, and other science topics led by Black university students studying STEM. The Black Youth In STEM Workshops will be offered on Tuesday evenings at the University of Manitoba (Fort Garry campus). There are 5 workshops to choose from so you can choose any that work best for you and your family.

Grade 4-6 - Meet student engineers, then design, build, and test a rubber-band powered car. Tweak and race your design while learning how forces and friction affect speed. -
GUEST FACILITATORS: UMSAE FORMULA DESIGN TEAM TAKE OVER!
Grades 7–12: Investigate gear ratios, run tests, and analyze data to balance speed and torque. Do quick market research, sketch concepts, and build a motorized car that meets a client brief—then present your final design. -
Grade 4-6: Discover local wildlife, then dissect an owl pellet to uncover the food web in action. Become an ecosystem detective and map who-eats-whom in Manitoba’s habitats.
-
Grades 7–12: Explore comparative anatomy hands-on. Identify organs, systems, and structure-function relationships while practicing real lab skills and scientific observation.
-
Grade 4-6: Use Ozobots to explore how autonomous vehicles “see” and make decisions. Code routes and challenges, then test how small changes impact performance—hello future of mobility with Artificial Intelligence!
-
Grades 7–12: Participants will get a fun, beginner-friendly introduction to Artificial Intelligence and concept of Machine Learning, learning how technology is shaping the world around us. This session encourages critical thinking and curiosity about the future of tech.
Session is a repeat from Spring 2025 -
Grade 4-6: Dive into the building blocks of life with a kid-friendly lab exploring cells and microscopes. Final hands-on activity announced soon—expect slides, stains, and big discoveries in tiny places
-
Grades 7–12: Extract DNA from strawberries, then explore cells under the microscope. Learn lab techniques, make your own slides, and connect cell biology to biotech and health careers.
